Botulinum toxin application has become synonymous with a more youthful-looking complexion. It can soften or even completely reduce visible wrinkles and effectively prevent new ones from forming. When used thoughtfully, it can accompany you on your journey toward graceful, natural aging for many years, delivering remarkable results.
Botulinum toxin: a proven method for wrinkle correction
Botulinum toxin can support the care of your appearance at any stage of life. Owing to its precise, unit-based application, it offers a highly versatile spectrum of effects tailored to individual needs. Younger clients frequently choose it as a preventive measure to relax facial muscles and inhibit the formation of expression lines—a practice often referred to as “baby botox.” In contrast, more mature clients may benefit from higher-intensity treatments designed to soften and correct established wrinkles, resulting in a naturally refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.
Which lines can be treated with botulinum toxin
Botulinum toxin is most commonly used to address wrinkles in the upper half of the face. Specifically, it is effective for treating:
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Frown lines between the eyebrows, also known as glabellar lines
- Wrinkles in the outer eye corners, often called crow’s feet
- Brow lift
- Vertical lip wrinkles, also called lip lines or smokers’ lines
It is also suitable for non-invasive facial contouring, such as:
- Gummy smile – by relaxing the muscle above the upper lip, a more balanced smile with less visible gum can be achieved
- Masseter – injections into the chewing muscle can create a slimmer appearance of the cheeks and narrow the lower face
- Platysma or the “Nefertiti lift” – a highly specific rejuvenation treatment for clients who overuse the muscles along the sides of the neck; by relaxing these muscles, the tension is reduced and the skin appears smoother
In addition to the treatments listed above, at Esthé we also use botulinum toxin to address excessive sweating.

What is botulinum toxin and how does it work?
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It acts as a muscle relaxant by preventing the transmission of neurological signals from the brain to the targeted muscle. Botulinum toxin type A has been used for over 40 years as a significant therapeutic agent in neurology, ophthalmology and dentistry. Since the 1990s, it has become a cornerstone of aesthetic medicine.
What does the effect of botulinum toxin look like in aesthetic practice? If you frown frequently, the facial muscle responsible for drawing the eyebrows together becomes chronically overactive. This occurs at the expense of other facial muscles, leading to muscular imbalance, similar to what is observed in conventional physiotherapy. Repeated activation of this muscle also creates a pronounced line that gradually deepens over time. Through precise application of botulinum toxin, we are able to temporarily deactivate, release and relax this muscle. As a result, the wrinkle naturally smooths out.
How long does the effect of botulinum toxin last?
You will begin to notice the effects gradually within 2–7 days, with the full result developing after approximately 2 weeks. The effect typically lasts for 3–6 months and then naturally subsides without any permanent consequences.
With repeated treatments, this duration tends to extend slightly over time. You might expect that the procedure would need to be performed more frequently, but in fact, the opposite is true. By relaxing the targeted muscles, wrinkle formation slows down, and you gradually “unlearn” habitual expressions such as frowning or furrowing the forehead.
What does the treatment look like?
Botulinum toxin is injected using an extremely fine needle. In the selected area, the doctor will make a few tiny injections that you will hardly feel. For most clients, the procedure is completely painless. To ensure maximum comfort, we also offer the option of applying an anaesthetic cream beforehand.
The treatment is gentle and requires no special preparation. After approximately 15 minutes, including aftercare instructions, you can resume your usual daily activities.
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before and after the procedure. Alcohol dilates blood vessels and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling in the treated area.
- Do not take blood-thinning medications on the day of the treatment.
- Keep your head upright for approximately 4–6 hours after the procedure. Avoid lying down or bending forward to ensure the substance remains precisely where it was injected and is absorbed in the intended area.
- During this time, do not touch, scratch, or rub the injection sites. Ideally, avoid applying makeup immediately after treatment to minimise the risk of infection, as the injection points are essentially tiny wounds.
- For about 1–2 days post-treatment, refrain from vigorous exercise, air travel (due to atmospheric pressure changes), and exposure to extreme temperatures such as saunas, cryotherapy, or tanning beds. Be gentle when washing, removing makeup, or touching your face.
- For two weeks following the procedure, avoid cosmetic massages, heat-based treatments (e.g., laser procedures), and non-urgent dental work.
- Your treating physician will provide you with further personalised aftercare instructions prior to the application of botulinum toxin.
Botulinum toxin must not be administered to: pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with disorders of neuromuscular transmission (e.g., myasthenia gravis), anyone with known hypersensitivity to any of the components of the preparation, individuals with any ongoing infectious illness (this includes anything from a mild cold to an active cold sore or mouth ulcer). On the day of treatment, it is essential to refrain from taking blood-thinning medications (e.g., warfarin, aspirin). Individuals with a history of botulism are resistant to botulinum toxin, meaning the treatment will not be effective for them.
“Botox” – Myths, Concerns, and Media PerceptionBotox
The tabloids often fuel public fear that botulinum toxin will leave your face frozen into an expressionless mask, unable to convey even the slightest emotion. Media outlets eagerly showcase celebrities whose unnatural appearances are frequently the result of plastic surgery or poorly executed dermal fillers. This concern is not entirely unfounded. But why?
Due to its widespread popularity, botulinum toxin has fallen into unqualified hands—ranging from complete amateurs in beauty salons to inadequately trained doctors. Although aesthetic medicine works with minimal and completely safe doses compared to general medicine, botulinum toxin remains one of the most potent natural toxins and should always be treated with respect.
Botulinum toxin injections should always be administered by a doctor—one who is specifically trained in this field. A true expert has an in-depth understanding of facial anatomy and its intricacies, can tailor the treatment to individual needs, accurately estimate the precise dosage, and deliver it with millimetre precision to the correct depth and location on your face. By placing your trust in a skilled specialist, any concerns can be confidently put to rest. Our team consists exclusively of seasoned specialists who prioritise your health and natural appearance above all else.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Botulinum Toxin
Baby botox is a highly popular aesthetic procedure that involves administering a minimal dose of botulinum toxin to younger clients in areas where wrinkles are likely to form over time. This approach helps delay and soften their eventual appearance.
You may notice tiny, virtually invisible injection marks at the treated sites. Most clients return to their usual activities without anyone noticing they have had any procedure. Occasionally, you might experience slight redness, mild swelling or small bruises, which will fade completely within a few days.
If you wish to apply make-up immediately afterwards to conceal any traces, we recommend using a brand-new product to minimise the risk of introducing bacteria into the small injection sites.
Yes—and for overall facial rejuvenation, it is often highly advisable. As described above, botulinum toxin is typically used for the upper part of the face and specific dynamic wrinkles. For lines in the lower face or deeper creases, we may recommend complementary procedures such as mesotherapy or hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. Our doctors will always help you find the most suitable approach.
As for the synergy of laser treatments and botulinum toxin, it is also possible on the same day, you just need to choose the right order. For example, we will first perform laser rejuvenation and then inject botulinum toxin, but never the other way around. After applying botulinum toxin, you will have to postpone laser treatments for about 14 days until the botulinum toxin is properly absorbed.
In the concentrations used in aesthetic medicine, botulinum toxin is not dangerous. At Esthé, there is no need to worry about losing your facial expressions or developing an unnaturally stiff appearance. We place great emphasis on maintaining a natural look.
The effects of botulinum toxin last approximately 3–6 months. There are no restrictions on how frequently you can undergo treatment. Because we administer it in carefully measured units, we can adjust the dose precisely to suit your needs and the current condition of your skin. For a more comprehensive outcome, your doctor may recommend combining botulinum toxin with other treatments to further enhance the overall effect.
